Fun with food from garden to table
A children’s cookbook that takes you out to the garden, into the kitchen and around the table to enjoy fresh food each season.
Now available from MCC Resources, Simply in Season Children’s Cookbook is an imaginative, active way for kids of all ages, but especially 6 to 12 year olds, to get in touch with fresh local food — to see where it comes from and have fun preparing it.
It’s about eager hands reaching into the soil and planting seeds, then picking ripe strawberries ready to eat or to blend into Strawberry Dream Cream. Each “in the garden” spread shows fruits and vegetables you might find growing in spring, summer, autumn and winter.
It’s about messy gooey hands, flour scattered across the counter and the sweet smells of Very Berry Crunch wafting from the oven. Each recipe — drawn from the original Simply in Season cookbook — was kid-tested and parent-approved, with modifications to meet adventurous and picky eaters alike.
It’s about proud hands placing bowls of freshly made Green Monster Soup on the table as family and friends gather around. Each season ends with a prayer of thanks to God for the gift of food and for all the hands involved in bringing it to the table.
Go ahead. Get your hands into it. And open your eyes, nose and curiosity to the foods of each season.
