Journeys in Simply in Season

Peter Eash-Scott Review (Review)

“Our family’s cooking has predominantly come from the More With Less cookbook, Extending the Table, and another vegetarian cookbook. Simply In Season is a welcome addition that has already established itself among our other frequently used cookbooks. Its design is sharp and very helpful. Brightly color-coded sections demark each season, the names of fruits and vegetables used in each page’s recipe(s) are bolded in the margins, healthy eating tips are interspersed throughout the book, and the fruit and vegetable guide at the beginning of the book makes branching out and trying new foods easy.

“The only season I’ve sampled so far has been summer, but it’s been quite a treat. Having a cookbook that zeroes in on what’s in season makes it easier to buy locally. We belong to a CSA and having Simply in Season around this summer has helped us prepare some of the vegetables less familiar to us.

“The Southwestern Corn Chowder (p.95) was an easy, fresh summer soup—quick to make and very flavorful. The Fresh Tomato and Basil Pasta (p.122) was another fast recipe that, with good, local produce, simply tasted like summer. The Eggplant Cheese Pie (p.139) was incredibly easy to throw together and extremely tasty.

“The Mexican Stuffed Peppers (p.130) took a little bit more time to make, but were well worth the wait. The suggested preparation created a beautiful dish that packed a wonderful concoction of beans, vegetables, and herbs into sweet peppers—a huge hit with our company.

Using local produce that’s in season tastes better and has made this summer’s meals a joy to prepare. Simply In Season has an impressive selection of recipes and an important focus, and our family will be using this cookbook for many summers to come.”
